The Five Stages of Mounting a High Bicycle 'Penny Farthing'
Designed and Built by Merlin at his Magic Workshop
Participants taking part in this venture would be advised to learn to cycle on a normal bicycle as retaining ones balance is essential , falling off is an extremely painful experience. Having an assistant in attendance is a great advantage when attempting the following .
Stage 1 Make sure the road ahead is clear. Hold the handle bar firmly. Place right foot on foot rest. Using left foot scoot along to gather speed.
Stage 2 As speed increases, pull on handle bar whilst applying sufficient pressure on your right foot to lift your left foot clear of the ground.
Stage 3 Keeping the front wheel in line with the main frame climb over the saddle.
Stage 4 When the left pedal has passed top dead center, place your left foot on the pedal whilst lifting the right foot off the foot rest and placing it on the right pedal.
Stage 5 Keep the front wheel in line with the main frame and pedal away. Relax and enjoy the pleasures of ridding a High Bicycle as cyclists did in the Victorian Era.
Dismounting is the reverse of the above procedure .
On no circumstances should you attempt ride a High Bicycle in mixed traffic until you feel absolutely confident that you are in full control of the cycle.
Note:
Failing to complete Stage 3 correctly could be an advantage should you wish to sing in the Vatican choir as a fully pledged Castrato .
Hence the saying
Our Herbert is much improved
Since he’s had his b---- removed
No sensation, no desire
Now sings Alto in the choir.
